Little by Little

Little by little we are making small improvements to our home. I love seeing the changes & fresh looks as we tackle one project at a time. As you know, I love cooking/baking and have a slight obsession with cookbooks....however, I am one of these people that actually do use my cookbooks on a regular basis! I didn't really have anywhere easily accessible to store them but my parents had an old cookbook shelf that they were not using & had in their attic. Dad got it down for me and David took it and cleaned it up & painted it for me. Have I told you lately that I have the greatest husband in the world? I love you honey!!!! He hung it by my china cabinet in the kitchen and I put all the cookbooks I frequently use on it. Now, this is just a very small portion of my cookbook collection mind you! I still have several cookbooks I want to purchase or get for my birthday in March.

Over this past weekend, David & I worked together to re-do Wyatt's bedroom. I must say we make quite a team and had some fun in the process. The walls were peach with this southwestern border and it was time to give him a "boys room". This is the before picture. Sorry about the messy room but I forgot to take a picture before we started and realized I needed one about halfway through ripping off the border.
We painted it "Little Sprouts" color from the Valspar series of paint at Lowes. It is like a yellow-green color and matches his curtains/bedding well. Best of all there is no more border and it makes his room seem much brighter & happier. He loves it to say the least. We still have to paint the shelves David made to hold his toys, we are going to paint the bookcase & nightstand (which was my grandmother's) and then the room will be complete.
I had bought some 8x10 wooden picture frames at the dollar store awhile back. I decided to paint them and put 2 of them in Wyatt's room. I used acrylic paints and then put mod podge over the paint to seal it and give it a shiny finish. This is what the unpainted wood looked like (yes, I had already painted the other side red...again, I forgot to take a picture at the start):
This is what they looked like after I was done. I did the red one & the blue one. The wooden one he had made at church for Mother's Day the year he was born and I didn't want to re-frame it. I like how they add a splash of bright color to his walls and they bring out the blues/reds in his bedding too!
I had bought him these letters for his nursery before he was born. They were pastel blue/white gingham letters. Isn't it amazing what a little $2.00 can of black spray paint will do? Now his new letters are hanging over his bed!
Once we get everything in his room done, I will post some completed room pictures too! Today I am going to try my hand at royal icing. If I can do it and it look good, I am going to make cookies for the kids to give their classmates for Valentine's Day. If it works, I will post pictures of it tomorrow and if it doesn't I will post about my flop! (ha)
