Our 10 year old has three learning "challenges" and they greatly affect her spelling and vocabulary skills. It is a constant struggle to teach her how to remember to spell words, how to learn what words mean so she can use them appropriately in sentences and of course, using a dictionary is a super challenge for her. Now you know I post honest reviews and I have to admit that when I first received the See-N-Spell package in the mail my first thought was "Seriously?! They think this works?"
I received the See-N-Spell Quick Reference Guide which was just a very thin book that contains the correct spelling to over 300 commonly used words in the American English language. There are three alphabetized sections in this book: Most Commonly Used Vocabulary Words, Commonly Misspelled Words and My Special Interest Words.
Seeing as how there are just 40 pages (compared to 1,000+ in most dictionaries) the See-N-Spell allows our daughter to quickly find words she is unsure of so she can spell them correctly. She can simply know the first letter of the word, then look through the alphabetized list of words to find the word she needs and copy the correct spelling onto her work. This method has greatly reduced the amount of corrections she has to make. It has also given her confidence in her dictionary skills because even though See-N-Spell isn't as complete as a regular dictionary it is teaching her those same skills in a simpler format.
The See-N-Spell also comes with a free See-N-Read tool. This was of great benefit to not only our 10 year old but to our 6 year old who is a beginning reader as well. This hand little tool is "designed to help readers reduce word and line skipping enabling them to improve fluency and comprehension."
You can view a sample page of the See-N-Spell Quick Reference Guide or it is available for purchase at just $9.99! Despite my skepticism at first, we quickly discovered that these two simple tools are a huge learning asset for our children and very much worth the investment. Like my Mom always said "You can't judge a book by its cover" because this book is a powerful tool packed into a simple, easy to use format. Reading has come easy to most of my kids, but my 8yo struggled. A similar reading tool really helped her too! I'll look into this material - I'm glad you reviewed it. :)
