Learning to read is an important skill for all children. And we wanted to make it an enjoyable experience for children as well. Children love working and playing on the computer and the Reading Eggs program is all about bringing out the best in each child. We created Reading Eggs as a unique online world where children learn to read. It supports each child’s learning by offering individual, one-on-one lessons that allow children to progress at their own rate. The program has been developed by a highly experienced team of educational teachers, writers and developers. The Reading Eggs program focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustained reading success. It completely supports what children learn at school and will help to improve your child’s results at school.
To begin, your child can take an assessment test to determine which level they are ready to start working on. Lessons 1-40 (Level 1) is for absolute beginners, Lessons 41-80 (Level 2) is for emerging readers and Lessons 81-120 (Level 3) is for early readers. Wyatt started with Lesson 1 since he is just beginning to read and he can always use a little reinforcement in areas he may already feel confident in.
Reading Eggs is designed for both homeschoolers and public schooled children. There are over 100 lessons for children along with a story writing factory, new games, new books and more. In the world of Reading Eggs, children can decorate their own home, create their own avatar and then shop for accessories for it while traveling to new destinations via Reggie's Bus.
Wyatt loved playing Reading Eggs and I honestly don't think he realized how much he was learning through this game play. He would beg us to let him play even though he had spent lots of time on the game already. He loved seeing what new egg creation would "crack open" when he completed a lesson and we often heard him singing along to the little song sounds. Reading Eggs also offers free activity sheets to go along with each lesson. The only downside of the free activity sheets is that they print in full color (which uses up quite a bit of printer ink with each printed page) and I think these could be made into more economically friendly black and white pages. I'm not sure if the other "issue" we had with Reading Eggs was something on our end or if other reviewers had a similar problem but the sound on the game was wacky for us. Some levels/games would be normal and the next step might be so loud we were scrambling to control the volume. It was not a constant, steady volume throughout the game. However, Wyatt had so much fun playing this game, we just kept the volume control minimized on the screen so we could quickly adjust it as needed.
You can try out Reading Eggs for yourself with their free trial. If your child enjoys it (which I'm sure they will) you can purchase the game. It is $9.95/month, or $49.95 for 6 months or you can purchase a 1 year subscription for just $75.00. If you need to use it in a school setting, you can read about school pricing here. You can also read what other TOS crewmembers thought about Reading Eggs on the TOS blog.
Disclaimer: I was given a free subscription to Reading Eggs for review purposes only as a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew. No monetary compensation was received.
