Today is the celebration of Dr. Seuss birthday! I grew up reading Dr. Seuss books, as a pre-K teacher I used them heavily in the classroom because not only are they engaging for kids but they often teach lessons and concepts as well and as a Mom, I still enjoy reading them to our kids. A couple of years ago, our entire family was in the play "Seussical the Musical". David, Abbey & I were a Who Family from Whoville and Wyatt was the little elephant bird that hatched out of the egg at the end of the play. Yeah, he stole the show! It was SO fun! So today, in honor of Dr. Seuss birthday, I thought I would share lessons I've learned from Dr. Seuss books over the years.......
The Foot Book taught me opposites.....
The ABC Book taught me not only my ABC's
but it also taught me tongue-twisters
And I still like to say "tuttle-tuttle tree" real fast!
And To Think I Saw That on Mulberry Street
made me wish that we had a Mulberry Street in
my hometown...we didn't of course and no parade
in our town ever compared to the fun that was had on
Mulberry Street!
The classic Cat in the Hat was a lesson learned that
if my little pet goldfish ever talked to me, I
should listen to him immediately because all the Cat's
chaos and confusion could have been avoided if they'd
listen to that little ol' fish!
Out of all the creatures in There's A Wocket in my Pocket
I wanted a Nooth Grush on my toothbrush
I mean seriously.....is he not the cutest?!
Night after night, I'd go to the bathroom and find
my plain ol' toothbrush with no Nooth Grush to be found.
Hooper Humperdink....? NOT HIM!
Taught me about friendship and the importance of
including everyone in games and fun at school
regardless of their social status or looks.
The Sneetches and Other Stories also had a great lesson.
Trying to be like everyone else won't make me happy.
I simply have to be myself....
no amount of "stars upon thars" brings happiness!
The Tooth Book had to be written by Dr. Seuss dentist!
It made me want to take care of my teeth at all costs
and not lose them to poor habits or bad judgment!
One my parents wished I would have listened to more is
The Early Bird......
You know....the early bird gets the worm.
Well, I prefer to let him have it....
while I stay nice and cozy in my bed!
Even as an adult, last March I made cupcakes for my sister's school
to celebrate Dr. Seuss Day! They were red fish, blue fish cupcakes
and they ended up being featured in Family Fun Magazine!
I was inspired by a Dr. Seuss book even as an adult.
And last but certainly not least....
We've learned about parenting with Dr. Seuss
Hop on Pop....Yeah, David felt like these 2 pages were
written about evenings in his life. The kids love jumping on
him and playing around on him and he takes it for awhile
and then he says "STOP...you must not hop on Pop!"
So what are you doing to celebrate Dr. Seuss birthday???
